Also, might I point out that having a server stack devoted to the front end is becoming a bit obsolete? With the CORS standard broadly supported even on S3, a successful website doesn't really need more than an API and a javascript app.

We store that data in CouchDB, inside of an eventing system that accepts arbitrary, timestamped data clobs. Writing a view to figure out the most recent one is reasonably easy... though we one-up that by writing a view that collects all events-to-process since the last time the script executed and read that instead.
