I was curious besides your favorite IDE/texteditor, whats your
favorite day to day tool you use? One of my favorites is a good screen
capture programs like skitch (free on mac) or snagit. Another one I
really like is Jing which is a free screencast program.

I find myself using xScope on a daily basis for front end work. http://xscopeapp.com/

My latest favorite for making git an effortless part of my workflow is Tower. http://www.git-tower.com/

I wish I could say I have a cool new editor but I am still stuck with Textmate, it does the job.

Here are some that I've found useful:

MeasureIt extension for Chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/aonjhmdcgbgikgjapj[..]

FireBug http://getfirebug.com/

ImageOptim (very useful when configured as a service in Finder. Just right
click a folder and optimize all your images) http://imageoptim.com/

Less app (because I use Twitter bootstrap) http://incident57.com/less/

VLC Player (studies have found that code has fewer bugs if written when
listening to Mozart*)

**No they haven't.*

Has anyone ever used Multi-Edit? I used it constantly in the early 90's in
my DOS coding days. It was phenomenally powerful and customizable even back
then. It did absolutely everything except write the actual code. The full-up
version is expensive at $199, but there's also a Lite version at $49 which
sounds pretty good. I'm not sure PHP is one of the supported languages for
Lite, but I have an email in to them to find out.

grep is a big help for me, same with source control (I say source control
and not a specific one because usually we have to know and use a few
I definitely perfer git to perforce).

+1 firebug.

I also use the web developer tool bar[1] from Chris Pederick

I use it mainly for showing passwords  and showing hidden form elements.

SequelPro is in use everyday. I've tried to switch to MySQL Workbench, but
SequelPro does almost everything I need, is clean and fast. http://www.sequelpro.com/

I've used SnapNDrag for years for screen shots. http://www.yellowmug.com/snapndrag/

Versions for Subversion: http://versionsapp.com/

Gitbox for Git: http://gitboxapp.com/

A new addition that I'm regularly using now is Graphical HTTP Client. It
formats JSON responses, which is nice for debugging. http://www.uresk.net/httpclient/

BTW check out Skitch for mac, it's free and has a TON of cool features
and easy sharing ...

There's a great tool called 'ack' that's an improved version of grep
specifically for code searching:

PhotoShop, TextMate, GitBox, Querious DB GUI, Transmit FTP, Terminal,
Firebug, Chrome JS Console, iTunes :-)

Tim Piele Tue, 10 Apr 2012 11:31:15 -0700

Since you mention SequelPro I also realized that a few years ago I came across the best MySQL app I used yet, you should really check out Querius. The thing it has going for it is the UI and workflow in a single window just makes sense, it is hard to explain but most others are clunky in the way you navigate around through databases and tables. SequelPro would be my second choice for a free app though.

I don't want to start any big flame war, but the last several years OS X is more and more readily chosen as the platform among developers I have worked with. It is certainly always offered as a machine option. There are always those holdouts who don't for personal bias reasons it seems.

Rick Baskett Tue, 10 Apr 2012 12:42:38 -0700

I think that the closer your dev environment is to the server environment,
the better off you'll be.  OS X is pretty close and Ubuntu is very close.
MS Windows, not so much.  ...but I like a few windows apps that don't run,
or don't run well, under linux so I run Ubuntu as a guest OS under windows
which came pre installed on my laptop.  It's turned out to be a really
convenient setup.

I would love to see a Linux favorites list.  I'm a relatively recent
convert from MS Windows and command line linux to the graphical Ubuntu
desktop so I'm sure I'm missing a few cool tools.

Thanks,
Joel

Joel Simpson Tue, 10 Apr 2012 12:52:53 -0700

+1 for ubuntu. It's not the most exciting option, but somewhat customized
and it's very efficient to work with.

I'll have to check out those db guis, I paid for Navicat for mysql for
two features, structure synchronization and data sync/transfer. It
saves sooo much time and headaches keeping multiple db environments in
sync with each other as you add new tables, indexes, etc.

I went mac mainly because they had the best video cards in a laptop
(unless you bought a Alienware machine) since I like to game. I think
after that I picked mac cause of the terminal, it's so nice having
access to a powerful command line without having to install something
like cygwin. And now that I have lots of mac software (adobe suites)
it's hard to switch back over. Plus now that I do a bit of iphone
development I have been integrated into the collective and don't have
free will anymore ...

I use an 8GB Mac Mini for dev and a Toshiba laptop with W7 / Ubuntu dual
boot for testing and surfing the web at home (linux)...

Our internal dev server at Fortengo is a Mac Mini running Ubuntu 11... o_O
and the production is CentOS Linux at Media Temple.

I hate windows and only use it when I have to see how bad my code is fucked
on to the other 60% of the earth.

I don't want to get into a flame war but I have booted that POS Windows 7 a
total of 5 times in three months and
spent a half hour each time running updates and rebooting from freezing,
but this Mac Mini on my desk
has an uptime of 31 days and 7 hours ++... it just works, it clean, its
fast and its easy to use, so more money in my pocket...

If playing with command line all day and banging your head on your desk
fixing errors and then bragging about it on Facebook makes your peepee
bigger, well good for you.

I wanna get stuff done and go home content with my medium sized peepee...

Put more ram in your mini, and get VMware....if you run a "not authentic" windows 7 in your vm you never get the bullshit updates and as long as its in a vm and your not an idiot, you don't have to worry about viruses and malware. If your using it only for testing that shouldn't have to worry...

Cody

Cody Roberts Tue, 10 Apr 2012 22:21:58 -0700

Oh, also with the vm you can put an entry in your hosts file in windows and test locally =)

I've read a few articles on vmware fusion vs parallels and most
reviews say that parallels is a better performer than fusion.

They tend to leapfrog each other, every other version. Some versions, VMWare Fusion is better. Other versions, Parallels is better.

Ryan Parman Wed, 11 Apr 2012 08:56:33 -0700

Ubuntu 11.10 x64 here too.

Main box is a custom Toshiba Z835 with an i7 and 8gb DDR3.
Power on the go in a wafer thin package! I love it.

Some of the tools I've really been using a lot currently (besides
the prior ones I mentioned and wasn't serious about) are Eclipse
PDT, MySql Workbench, Bash/Sed Awk for OTF conversions, SVN
and GIT (via terminal), xDebug. PECL/PEAR and some other stuff.
