Emergency NAS Using OpenSolaris (and ZFS ZRAID)

Hello, I have a kind of an unsettling situation here in my company, we are running out of disk space in our file server (6 x 143 GB SCSI) and we have a big project on the coming weeks which will require a large chunk of space (2+ TB).

We are in the process of buying a new SAS Storage + Controller ( So that we can add disk space directly in our file server), however this process will take more than 3 months and the project can not be postponed.

So I was wondering if it was possible to use OpenSolaris (and its ZFS) In order to build a cheap NAS with ZRAID and a bunch of SATA disks, just as an emergency solution.

However one request that my superiors made very clear is that I should use the same file server (in order to maintain configurations on the client and file access policies) but the file server uses windows server 2008 and the users are controlled by the domain (AD).

Which leads me to the question, as to if its possible to attach this cheap nas to my file server (over the network) and still be able to grant permissions based on the AD just as I do in Windows Server?

Yes, CIFS support is built-in and supports ACLs and GPOs from Active Directory.

Check out genunix.org.

Let us know how it goes! Best of luck !

I built this OpenSolaris ZFS NAS fairly cheaply - http://www.adamretter.org.uk/blog/entries/diy-nas-software_a[..]
- costs and materials are at the bottom!

Have You thought about exporting your fileservers storage via iscsi,
attaching it to Windows Server (via Microsoft iSCSI Initiator) and
using it as a regular hard disk?
