Ben Franklin quote:

Just saw it mentioned on Engadget. Reading the article, I hadn't realized
the existence of the similar InfiniTV card until now. It's cool that we'll
potentially have 2 cablecard-compatible devices at our disposal in the near
future. If I pre-ordered one of these HDHR boxes and actually got one, could
I donate one to a developer to get the drivers developed in time for 0.25?
I don't think that'll be a problem, considering SiliconDust actually
uses Myth for their in-house testing.
The version of the hdhr library in .24 technically supports the
HDHomeRun Prime, per SiliconDust. It is likely that some other small
tweaks for usability/device setup will be needed to make setup easy,
but they are minimal and SD has been good about providing patches for
changes they need.
Robert
Of course, you then have to somehow extract a Cablecard from your providerand
then find someone who actually knows how to install it and activate it proerly...
--
Mike Perkins
Didn't the new laws go into effect that require them to easily provide
a CableCard for you?
I just did a search for "Charter cable card". It brought me to
Charter's policy page that states that they do support it and they will
rent one, but ONLY their techs are allowed to install and activate them.
I guess I'll need to find out pricing.
Doug

Ben Franklin quote:

If you can wait 9 months, then Charter should be allowing cable card
self-installs with the new regulations.

Wait....did I miss something in the last several months? I thought
this was going to be Window7 only, with DRM applied to it. Did they
actually get permission to provide the data openly for linux systems?

There are numerous discussions of this question in the list archives,
as well as two interviews given by myself that touched on it. If the
channel is marked copy freely, it will be capturable in Myth. What
this means specifically will vary from provider to provider and locale
to locale-- TWC customers will be mostly screwed, some Comcast
customers may be able to capture a large amount of their content.
It will mostly be a "try it and find out" proposition. Hopefully SD
will also expand their online "what will I get" service to show what's
marked copy free.
Robert
Oh, I see. It all happened mid august....shortly after I had my baby.
Yeah, I lost touch with a lot of what happened at that time :-)
I just skimmed the older threads in question, and I got the impression
there is a correspondence between firewire recordable channel and
cable card "copy freely" channels. Is this not correct? I'd love to
get cablecard support, but if there is literally no way to know the
level of support availabe without first blindly buying a HDHR Prime,
than that's unfortunate.
--
Ron
That correlation is loose at best. Some posit that firewire capturecopy freely, but they are governed by different policies entirely on
the headend and while this would be generally good policy, my
experience from having worked in a headend is that making this kind of
logical leap is bound to be wrong in real-life scenarios. Hopefully
SD will produce usable info regarding what to expect on a per-locale
basis.
Robert
Given all the voodoo that seems to be required to get firewire
recording working correctly, I'm hoping that copy freely > firewire
capture.
It's my (possibly flawed) understanding that if you have a Motorola
based set top box, you can get it to go into a diagnostic mode which
will display the current value of the redistribution control flag for
the current channel and that this will be the same information used by
the HDHR Prime to figure out if it can send the decrypted data to a
non-DRM supporting host.
See:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Confi[..]
This should allow some people to figure out how much they would likely
be able to record without actually purchasing anything. Of course,
even if a channel is marked as clear now, that's no guarantee that it
will be clear at any point in the future.
I have plenty of channels with RC == 0 which I still can't get working
over firewire.
Eric
I thought it was the CCI that indicated "Copy Freely, Copy Once, ...".
The RC flag (redistribution control), when set, tells the cable box it's
only allowed to output content to protected outputs (i.e. HDMI, firewire) in
encrypted form, and to unprotected outputs in degraded form.
The CCI info tells the receiving device how it should treat the data stream.
Whether it should allow copies of the stream to be made, once or more, etc.
See here for more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_Control_Information
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_Flag#The_FCC_Broadcas[..]
-Jerry
That's great information, thanks.
What I'm hoping is that the HDHR Prime will be able to communicate
this better to the backend. Right now, if a firewire tuner attempts
to record a channel that is encrypted in this way, it shows up as
successfully recorded in Watch Recordings but there's nothing actually
there and no indication of this until you try to watch it. A killer
feature would be the ability to ask the Prime "Can you send us this
program?" and get a yes/no answer and reschedule on another tuner if
the answer is no and for the backend to do all of this in real time.
Eric
While I realize that the flag may change, even on a per-show basis,
normally the flag will be consistent for a given channel, so the backend
could check with the Prime when scheduling and flag a warning that would
show up much like a conflict in the upcoming recordings screen. It
could also automatically reduce the priority of such recordings, so that
if the same show is available on another input or channel, it will pick
that up instead.
Or simply have an option to remove channels from a source if the Prime
says that they're not available to Myth in the setup. (This is probably
more realistic.)
This may be already implemented as part of the existing support for
scanning for channels with the HDHR library and the ability to test
for encrypted channels.
Eric
The sad truth is, had this development occurred about a year ago, I
would have been really excited. But after 12 months of living with
only broadcast networks PBS digital channels, I've learned how to
adapt. My main frontend is OS X, so no problem with Netflix and/or
flash streaming (comedycentral.com, nickelodeon.com, espn3.com, etc.).
By denying my Mythtv setup these channels, Comcast has in effect
taught me how to get the content elsewhere. By denying my Mythtv
setup access to premiums, Comcast has in effect taught me where I can
get episodes of Dexter, Entourage, etc.
It looks like the HDHR Prime will be wonderful for those of us with
access to copy freely broadcasts. I am on Time-Warner in the Triad of
NC, so I am probably out of luck in that regard, but would like to
know for sure. I currently have a cable box (hooked up to an HDPVR and
controlled via IR). Is there a quick and dirty method by which I can
discover the list of copy freely channels? Or is the flag set on a
show by show basis?
jr
Eric Sharkey posted the following to the list on 5/2. It should answer
your question IF you've got a Motorola box. It worked as claimed on my
DCH3200. It also worked via the remote control, FWIW.

Would the scanfw application that is online show this information as
well? I currently have a Motorola STB with an HD-PVR, mainly because
90% of what I record can only come from the STB. Only a few shows are
available on my HDHR. If I could get some of those shows via the Prime,
I'd order one in a heartbeat.
Thanks!
Harry
Here in northern NY,we have TW also..I checked my STB (Samsung) on each
channel and everyone is copy once except for the locals which are copy
freely... You can enter the diagnostic mode on most STB's (goggle for
how to enter the diagnostic menu for your STB) and check for your self....
From my research, I think there will be a lot of disappointed TW
customers...
in a round-about way yes.
What can be odd though, is what I'm experiencing with the setup I
built for my parents. They have TW and their cable box shows copy
freely for most all the same stations I show with Comcast, but the box
basically will not allow them over firewire. the OTA it will, but the
others are next to impossible to get to transfer over firewire. every
so often I would luck out.
I don't know if that means one shouldn't trust scanfw or shouldn't
trust the diagnostic screen, but I'd say your best bet with TW may be
to just try the Prime with a cable card to see if it works or not.

Ah. Thanks, Rod. I have a Cisco Explorer 4250HD, but I am sure that
I can google up the menu equivalent for CCI.
I have Comcast in Southern New Jersey (Atlantic City area), so I'll try
both methods (scanfw and the diag mode on the STB) and see if its worth
investing in.
Thanks,

Comcast is generally quite good (all things relative) with their 5C
and firewire so you should be good. Will throw some luck your way
anyway though.

Firewire recording does not mandate behavior when dealing with copy
freely content. While many boxes will allow free access to those
channels, many others will perform the 5c handshake, which MythTV cannot
respond to. Such channels will be accessible through the HDHR Prime,
but not necessarily over firewire.
yea, that's what I noticed with my parents' setup, and wanted to pass
along in case scanfw doesn't work for him.

I think on TW you're pretty much out of luck. I wouldn't even bother tryig it.
You may be interested in this thread on the TiVo forum.
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=451107
Tivo users have to worry about copy-once content as well because it
blocks certain Tivo features (multi-room viewing, tivo-to-go, etc.).
Eric
Well. The Prime might be useful as an auxillary tuner just for the
locals if nothing else. I use my HDHomeRun like that now. However, it
is a bit tricky since I my antenna options are limited. If I had land
line cable, I might be interested in the Prime just for the locals.
Having a couple of extra tuners can help avoid conflicts even if
the tuner has a limited number of channels. Broadcast networks seem
to be less flexible in terms of scheduling. Whereas a lot of cable
networks will broadcast new shows multiple times. You aren't SOL if
you manage to miss "premiere".
[deletia]
I already have an HDHR and one other digital card, plus 2 pvr-150's and a
HD_PVR,but it would be nice to be able to record using a CC,but it isn't
in the cards for me.. I would buy one in an instant if it was..

I have TW in Nebraska and according to their website the CC device has
to have "Tru2Way" capabilities to receive all the content we now get
with the STB. Will/does the Prime have this capability? If not then
according to their site the number of available channels via CC will be
very limited.
Don
Tru2Way will only be required to get video-on-demand and pay-per-view.
Regular cablecard will work with everything else.
This is one of those cases where the cable company wants to be
intentionally unclear because they want you to rent a STB.

I tried to use scanfw, but it keeps failing. The error says:
hdevine*******
Couldn't communicate with 192.168.1.200 on port 6543:
IO::Socket::INET::MythTV: connect: Connection refused
It did this with both the backend running or stopped. I was trying to
generate the channels file that scanfw needs.
So, I tried to look at my STB diag screen. I turned it off and hit OK
within 2 seconds and got the screen up. When I choose "Interface
status", it says that Copy Control is set to Copy Free, and 5C
implementation is set to No. The Current Channel Status option shows
the last 2 channels that each tuner was on, but I don't see anything
about any Copy Free. I do see CCI is set to 0x00 though.
entertain the thought of an HDHR Prime at this time?
Thanks,
Harry
My provider is putting most of the new channels on switched video, I
suspect these channels require Tru2Way as well. My current television
has a cable card and I am not able to get these new channels.
Those channels should only require a tuning resolver, which the HDHR
Prime supports.
Robert
CCI at 0x00 is what you want, and it's consistent with what others
have reported for Comcast. The HDHR Prime is the ideal tuner for this
kind of channel.
Eric
SDV requires "tuning adapters" for devices such as Tivo and
the HDHR Prime and the Ceton InfiniTV. The provider is
supposed to provide them to their customers when asked
(depending the whether the provider is using Cisco or
Motorola equipment, you many need more than one).
Unfortunately, most/all TVs do not have ability to use the
tuning adapters (although for TV's with USB ports, in
theory, it would *just* require a firmware update, which
I am unaware of any manufacturer actually doing).
But the HDHR Prime was designed to support SDV,
so, in theory, it should "just work" (I seem to recall
that Ceton released a number of updates to get
the TAs working correctly, so "just work" may be
an oversimplification in the real world).
Gary
Well that's good news! Do I have to rent/order/purchase anything else
from Comcast to get the HDHR-Prime to work? I read up on it a little
and I'm confused about the CableCard. Is there one in it? Or do I have
to provide one?
Thanks!
Harry
You have to provide one from your cable company, and once configured,
that cablecard gets permanently registered against that tuner and cannot
be moved.
You have the pleasure of renting one from your service provider.

Thats too bad. If you can't register a customer-owned card, what is the
point in buying one?
I'm not sure I understand the question. US Cable providers are
legally obligated to provide a cable card on request, and generally
charge a fair amount less to rent one than a full set top box. The
cablecard can be used to receive (in Windows) all subscribed channels
in pure digital form, sidestepping the need for lossy or unreliable
capture processes like analog capture and IR blasting. Both the Ceton
and HDHR device are capable of receiving the virtual channel tables
which map the difficult-to-understand multiplexid-serviceid channel
numbers to real comprehensible ones like in a set top box. In MythTV,
with certain providers (notably Comcast) it is quite possible that
many people will be able to capture the entire non-premium lineup in
some markets (ie, everything but HBO, Starz, etc). The single
cablecard can also provide decryption services for all three tuners on
the HDHR Prime
So, to review:
* All channels
* Unmodified
* Correct channel mappings
* Lower rental cost
* Must be provided anywhere in the US
* Possible broad usability in MythTV
* One cablecard services three tuners
Hopefully there's no more ambiguity about why Myth users might care
about this device? Speaking for myself, and I daresay a great many
myth users, I don't care who provides what part of the equipment-- so
long as ultimately I control the content, and the manner in which it
is consumed (legally).
Robert
....
There is little reason to buy one at this time (same reason there
is little reason to buy one of those set top boxes off eBay).
Providers vary, but the position of the US big two (Comcast
and Time Warner Cable) is that they will not activate a customer
owned STBs, nor activate a customer owned CableCard. The
providers insist that as "security devices" (to protected their
content assets), they fully own/manage them. The FCC rules
that allow customer owned equipment to be connected is not
currently interpreted to cover security devices (at least by
the providers). I am sure that it is just a coincidence that
that also corresponds to higher monthly fees. As with much
else, specific franchises may vary. And in Canada, I
understand it is common and supported to purchase STBs.
Clarification of my response (based on Roberts interpretation
of the question). I was talking about purchasing a CableCard,
not about the HDHR Prime.
The HDHR Prime, with a provider CableCard will, as Robert
says, will be useful to providers (such as Comcast and
others) that are enlightened enough to provide copy
freely marked content.
You don't buy one. You rent it from the cableco, monthly. They have to make
*something* off people who aren't renting boxes...

Makes sense when combined with "wishful thinking" ;-)
Andre
I was over on the Silicon Dust forum and apparantly, the TW 'tuning
adapter' (from Cisco) only support two tuners with one TA. This it ends
up making one tuner of the 3 in the Prime unusable. So until TW/Cisco
decides to update their tuning adapters to more current
technology/firmware that support up to 4 tuners, this may be a problem
for some TW customers. I have no background in this technology so all I
am doing is regurgitating what I found on that list.
http://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9902&hi[..]
BTW, according to the details on my TW site concerning channels with CC,
if the device does not support Tru2Way then about 30 channels are
affected because of SDV and require a TA. For me that is around 10
channels of interest.
Don
This is true currently, but the new FCC regulations that go into
effect July 1 require them to update the tuning adapter to support at
least 4 streams. So hopefully this will be resolved by the time the
Prime comes out (not sure what sort of penalties, if any, there might
be to entice them to be in compliance as soon as possible).
--
Ron Frazier
I cannot believe that Silicon Dust was (a) not aware that the
existing Cisco/SA TAs were two tuner only (it was well
known in the CATV engineering community), and (b) not
planning to be able support more than one TA per Prime
(since there would have been no assurance the FCC would
rule as they did, or what the time frame would have been,
when this design was being performed).
My *conjecture* is that the Prime can/will support more
than one TA (perhaps via a USB hub), although it will
be preferable to not have to do so if the TA is upgraded.
I will note that no official Silicon Dust response has been
added to that forum, so I (and the forum participants) are
probably guessing about the SDV and TA support in the
Prime at FCS.
You are viewing this from the mistaken perspective that this technology
is for the customer's benefit when it is really for the benefit for the
cable companies.

And more to the point, the greedy bastards who run the content providers.

heavy pressure from the content providers they serve to keep things as
locked down as possible.
That doesn't really explain why Comcast has most everything copy
freely, Verizon has an even mix (Apparently at random as far as I can
tell, I get Nickelodeon HD as copy freely, but the SD equivalent is
copy-once. Try to explain the logic for that one.), and Time Warner
has everything they can nailed down. It's the same content providers
in nearly all cases.
Eric
I had a couple of responses to this off the list so I want to post
some more detail here in case anyone is interested.
Up to now, I"ve just been blacklisting channels after I notice a bunch
of recordings that failed, but I decided to get a little more rigorous
this weekend and try to figure out just which channels/programs
Verizon is marking copy freely and which aren't. I hacked together a
crude firewire channel scanner script (attached) which uses
firewire_tester to see which channels are available over firewire and
which aren't. The script then spits out some SQL which can be used to
set the visible flag so the scheduler doesn't try to schedule anything
on those channels.
The results surprised me a little. Several channels which I regularly
record on were, at the time I ran the script, marked as unavailable.
I checked one case and confirmed with the STB's diagnostic mode that
it really was showing CCI 0x02 despite the fact that it was a PBS
broadcast channel which was being sent in the clear. I had four
broadcast channels fail to tune this way. Since I have many
successful recordings on that PBS channel, I can only assume that
Verizon is flipping the CCI settings periodically based on some
unknown condition. This may be responsible for some of my failed
recordings on that channel.
My understanding of the HDHR Prime is that when installed with a cable
card, it will refuse to send CCI 0x02 programs to a MythTV backend
even if the channel is not encrypted and it could have done so if the
cable card had been removed and it had been configured as a standard
HDHR. This is making me rethink the idea that I don't need to have a
standard HDHR if I have a Prime.
For the curious, I append below the channels I pay for as well as the
visible flag which is 0 if the channel is blocked over firewire and 1
if it was available. For six cases, I overrode what the script
determined at that moment in time and set visible to 1 since I knew
that I could often successfully tune those channels.

That is correct. Even if a show is broadcast unencrypted, if it is not
copy-freely, the tuner will refuse to send it to MythTV. There have
been issues in the past where exactly this happened. CableCard users on
Windows MCE were disrupted mid-recording where their provider
accidentally enabled copy protection on a broadcast channel.
http://experts.windows.com/frms/windows_entertainment_and_co[..]
Eek, that's awful. I assume that this is mandated by the CableCard folks, so
SiliconDust isn't allowed to test encrypted-ness (yeah, I know)? They're
forced to just respect the flags?
"you mean our customers will also have to buy one of our standard
HDHomeRun models for un-encrypted content?!"...
I don't see this as being a huge deal breaker. The dual tuner
HDHomeRun's have dropped quite a bit in price, and with content in the
clear you can also tune multiple channels on a single frequency. the
downside is the need for two power supplies and two ethernet ports on
your switch.

Alternately, it's not outside the realm of possibility that one or
more tuners of the three might be able to run in cablecard-free mode.
I suspect that would require some library updates, but it seems like a
distinct possibility.
Robert
yes, though SiliconDust keeps saying it's not possible. we will see.

All three tuners will act the same, either CableCard or QAM mode. No hybrid
modes. The CableLabs OCUR certification is for the entire device, not per
tuner. It may be true however that the PRIME will protect mistakenly
copy-protected broadcast channels where a QAM tuner will not. I have two
(four virtual) QAM PCI tuners in my backend. I will prioritize them so that
this situation will not affect me for broadcast channels. Also, from my
experience, Comcast does not dynamically change the copy protection flags in
my area.
- Tom
I can't see much about this. We have a Prime and 2 x Duals. Generally
this worked really well, until my son wanted us to setup MCE so he can
watch TV using his XBox. Generally MythTV uses Tuner 0 of the prime,
while MCE uses Tuner 3. MCE will lock the Tuner so other applications
know it's in use and roundrobin it to the next. However Myth doesn't.
This means MCE will quite happily steal a tuner from MythTV causing
LiveTV or Recordings to fail.
Other than getting a MythFrontend in my sons room, how easy would it be
to implement a lock using the hdhomerun software built into Myth.
This is the only thing Google brought up which doesn't really bode well.

Does anyone else have this issue?
--
Rob Davis
That is because no one has provided patches.
I once thought about the issue a bit, and the (new) edge
cases that are produced regarding lock failures (and
rescheduling for an available tuner for the current
program, and if so, what that impacts for other future
programs may be, and when you should try to retry
that tuner (or try try again and continue to fail...)).
In the end, I concluded that for a CAPEX of ~$130
for an additional Prime and an OPEX of around two
cups of designer coffee a month (for the rental of an
additional cable card) it was a clear win to get that
additional Prime.
You can never have too many tuners, but you can
often have too few, and trying to work around too
few is simply not worth the effort (or the occasional
missed "event" program). Buy an additional
tuner.
Gary
It has always been stated that MythTV expects any hardware has been
given access to to be dedicated for use by MythTV. While the proposed
changes would certainly be more "proper", the development efforts would
likely be better spent getting LiveTV support to the UPNP server.
The problem here with Comcast is not so much the additional tuner, but
rather how their new cable card pricing works. 1 Cable Card is free, a
second is $1.99 per month but then triggers an HD Access fee of $8.99
and an additional outlet fee of $8.99 per month, so would work out to a
monthly rental of $20 + tax. I may just drop one of the three tuners
off myth and allocate only 1 to mce. I have 2 x HDHomeruns for OTA for
local channels, so that is probably enough.
